Personal statement:
I am Ghulam Mustafa completed my PhD in 2011 with distinction from the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, University of Vienna Austria. During my PhD thesis, I designed recognition layers based on artificial nanostructured recognition materials including nanoparticles, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), ceramics and nanocomposite, characterized them with different analytical techniques like XRD, spectroscopy, GC-MS, FTIR,
AFM/ STM etc and finally use them as recognition material for different analytes detection. In a further step, I studied the effect of noble metal nanoparticles chemical hardness on sensor sensitivity by using different soft metals with prominent hardness difference i.e. MoS2, Cu2S and Ag2S systems as a recognition material for thiols detection. Furthermore, I designed nanocomposite materials, bearing novel collective recognition properties of affinity interactions and molecular imprinting, found highly suitable as sensor material for alcohols with pronounced sensitivity and selectivity. After my PhD, I worked in same group as a postdoctoral fellow in a project (EU-FP7 NMP4-SE-2012-280550)from July, 2011 to September, 2013. During my post doc I fabricated molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) based sensors for the real-time and online monitoring of functionalized surface nanoparticles. During my post doc I taught and
supervised bachelor, master and PhD level students and designed their working protocols.
Currently working as an Assistant Professor at The Department of Environmental Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad Pakistan. At the department, I am doing research and as well as teaching duties at graduate, master and PhD levels. I am teaching the subjects namely,
Chemical Sensor Technology and its Applications, Molecular Imprinting, Nanotechnology, Advanced Analytical Techniques, Material Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Air and Noise Pollution etc. On the other hand at the department I have developed a research group working for the fabrication of chemical sensors and biosensors for the real-time
and online sensing of analytes of interest e.g. VOCs, drugs, toxic gases, pesticides, heavy metals ions, reactive dyes, microorganisms etc. I am supervising students at bachelor, master and PhD levels.
I have achieved excellent success in a challenging field including materials chemistry, analytical chemistry and physical chemistry, utilization of polymer chemistry and thin layer manufacturing protocols. Furthermore, I also comprised of designing and characterizing nanoparticles and nanocomposites. I have acquired in-deep expertise in a very broad range of experimental techniques including polymer and sol-gel synthesis, molecular spectrometry (mainly FT-IR and Fluorescence), atomic force microscopy, basic oscillator electronics and fundaments of scientific data processing among others. My research work is resulted in a number of publications in high level journals and based on my experimental data more papers are to be published.
